Suave style is in

Last Updated 24 January 2017, 18:40 IST
If there’s one thing 2017 needs, then it is a sartorial promise on part of the male population to ditch their age-old polo-neck tees and recurring workwear clothes and upgrade to something more fresh and modern. As an area that is largely neglected, men’s fashion in India is undercooked at best. Thankfully, male celebrities like Ranveer Singh, are beginning to experiment with their personal style and the slew of emerging male fashion bloggers and stylists are paving the way for suave dressing. From re- organising your closets to investing in the season's biggest trends, here's a round-up of some essential style resolutions to add to your fashion check list.

Upgrade your basics
If your comfort level lies in basics, then there’s good news for you. Revamped basics like faded vintage denims inspired by the 70s and 80s, frayed and ripped details, rock band tees, and T-shirts with interesting textures and quirky slogans are making big news in the street-style circuit. Jogger pants are still doing the rounds with ripped and zipper details in good measure.

Emphasis on layering
Layers are sharp, practical and trams-seasonal. They instantly add dimension to a look. Add layers like bomber jackets, vests, scarves and stoles. It is important to keep it aesthetically pleasing by choosing colours that compliment each other, Contrasting textures and don't overwhelm it with too many bright colours. Each layer must be visible and statement-making on its own.

Add prints to your wardrobe
Fashion’s love affair with prints has entered the domain of menswear and has extended to not just nautical and chevron stripes but also blooming floral fronts, tropical prints and polka dots. Animal motifs and patches add a youthful vibe to even the most boring workwear. For starters, one can cleverly incorporate prints through accessories and small details like scarves, printed pocket squares and suit lapels. Printed pant-suit sets are for the experimental kind and score high on the trend radar.

Experiment with unique socks
Liven up a simple outfit with cute and quirky socks. Socks press for attention to details and brands are sticking up on dizzying patterns and prints. Care must be taken to keep it in tune with the rest of the outfit. Style-conscious men have bid adieu to monochrome pairs and have made a shift towards mismatched socks, fun emoji prints and fast food-inspired prints. Minimal floral prints are no more branded as feminine and are increasingly seen in the sock drawers of fashion pioneers. Keep an eye out for shoes that offset the socks.

Revamp your ethnics
Ditch all the extra bling and look towards innovative designs, modern cuts and sleek silhouettes. Designers are focusing more on Indian textiles like brocade and linen with interesting weaving techniques and are lending a contemporary and cosmopolitan twist to them, which is resulting in a profusion of East-meets-West at its sartorial best. Quilted jackets, long coats over ‘dhoti’ pants, embroidered stoles, velvet bomber jackets and juttis with Indian-inspired motifs must be added in your festive wardrobe.

In terms of colours, 2017 makes a strong and compelling case for vivid colours as opposed to the pastels trend, we carried all throughout last year. Sapphire blues, emerald greens, ruby red coupled with zesty colours will be reigning the runways and stores alike. Military-inspired pieces, limited edition sneakers, leather snapbacks, buttoned up shirts and luxe varsity jackets are still continuing to exert their influence this season as they did last season. So go ahead and de-clutter your wardrobe and pull out those classic staples and style them with modern elements.
