His birthday turned out to be his last for a 45-year-old interior designer-cum painter. He was stabbed to death by his 20-year-old son Revanth at his house at Subramanyanagar early Tuesday morning.

A resident of Subramanyanagar ‘D’ Block, Revanth stabbed Shivashankar for trying to murder his mother under the influence of alcohol, said the police. Revanth has been arrested and the knife used for the stabbing has been recovered. Shivashankar owned a house and had let it out. Addicted to alcohol, Shivashankar often used to pick fights with members of his family and neighbours.

Revanth, a BCom student in a private college in Rajajinagar, disliked his father since his childhood, added the police.  Shivashankar, who was drunk, returned home around 11 pm and picked a fight with his wife Jayalakshmi. He kept fighting with her till 3 am and sent her out of the house. Later, he tried to attack his wife with a knife on the road.

Revanth lost his cool on seeing this, snatched the knife and stabbed his father twice to save his mother. Shivashankar fell down and started bleeding profusely. Jayalakshmi took him to a nearby hospital with the help of neighbours. However, he died on the way. “My husband would abuse me in filthy language when he was drunk. However, I had ignored it. I lost my cool and protested when he alleged that I had an affair. He tried to attack me for protesting,” said Jayalakshmi. Revanth claimed that he did not intend to kill his father and was only trying to save his mother’s life.

In his statement to the police, Revanth said: “I wanted to buy a cake and celebrate my father’s birthday on Tuesday night. However, he created a ruckus. I grew up seeing him hararss my mother, but would control myself. However, I lost my cool due to his conduct and attacked him.”
