Historical makeover for road along Metro route in Vijayanagar

Want to appreciate the architectural marvels of Hampi? Well, you need not go to the capital of the erstwhile Vijayanagara Empire. You could soon experience ‘Hampi’ in Namma Bengaluru itself.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) are working on a project to upgrade the 6.5-km road that runs parallel to the Metro route from Magadi Road toll gate to Nayandahalli junction to turn the area into a mini Hampi. The area falls under Vijayanagar Assembly constituency.

Entitled ‘Vijayanagara Vaibhava’, the Rs 50-crore project will see 250 Metro viaducts painted like the pillars in Hampi and boulevards adorned with replicas of stone monuments — Virupaksha Temple or Kamal Mahal — in the true Vijayanagara style. Hold your breath, some of the artefacts of Vijayanagara Empire will even be replicated inside the Vijayanagar and Deepanjali Nagar Metro stations. Not just that, 20 parks along the stretch will be upgraded and floral saplings planted at median strips. Besides providing attractive lighting along the stretch, the project will also give the railings a makeover.

Housing Minister and Vijayanagar MLA, M Krishnappa, said work had begun on some of the viaducts while other concepts were still in the drawing board. “It’s our dream project. We want people from all over Bengaluru to visit our constituency and get a glimpse of Hampi,” he said.

While students from Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath will work on the design and sculpting to carve out replicas of Hampi’s stone monuments, The Ugly Indian, a civic engagement group, will partner the BMRCL for the project.

Krishnappa said local residents and urban experts were also being involved in the project. “If there are any changes, we will incorporate them at the earliest and put the plan to action,” he said.
