JOIN USTata Power Solar, the largest integrated solar company owned by Tata Power, expanded the capacity of its cell and module manufacturing facility in Bengaluru on Tuesday, with an investment of Rs 100 crore.
Addressing reporters, Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Anil Sardana said the expansion plan is in line with the government’s ‘Make in India’ game plan.
“The two-stage expansion, with an investment of Rs 100 crore, has doubled the company’s module capacity to 400 MW, from 200 MW, and increased its cell manufacturing capacity by 65% from 180 MW to 300 MW. As part of this process, Tata Power Solar has modernised and fully automated entire manufacturing facility,” he said.
Sardana said the gradual turnaround of the company and its expansion in capacity has been a hallmark achievement of the Tata Power Solar team, when other sector players are still facing challenges of sustained economics.
To a query on the prospects of coal-based power projects, he said the company is ready to go with the projects if there is technology to tap the carbon dioxide emission.
“But we will stick to our plan of focussing on making Tata Power to go green by achieving 40% of energy production from renewable sources,” he said.
Tata Power Solar Executive Director and CEO Ashish Khanna said the expansion and modernisation has come on the landmark achievement shipping 1 GW modules worldwide.
“This expansion, the second in less than three years, will further strengthen our leading position in the Indian solar manufacturing space. Tata Power Solar is known for its quality modules for 27 years and has one of the lowest warranty returns in the industry,” he said.
When asked about the hiring strategy, Khanna said the company is looking at more reskilling initiatives.

Tata Power Solar is rated a tier I module manufacturer by BNEF (Bloomberg New Energy Fund). It has shipped 1 GW modules to over 30 countries, of which more than 60% was shipped in the last five years.
The company has its manufacturing facility in Bengaluru only. It has completed more than 330 MW of ground-mount utility scale and 140 MW of rooftop and distributed generation projects across the country till date.
The renewable industry is getting a lot more government attention with its renewable energy mission of achieving 100 GW by 2022.
