Academic certificates to carry Aadhaar number

Last Updated 22 March 2017, 20:20 IST

The Centre has asked all universities to ensure that the students’ degree certificates, marksheets and other academic certificates carry their photograph and Aadhaar number.

In the latest directive to the universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought all vice chancellors to “immediately” introduce the “personal identification mechanism” in the security features of the academic documents to be issued to the students from now onwards.

“Such inscriptions, you would agree, will go a long way in uniformly marking a student’s personal identity and other associated details,” UGC Secretary Jaspal S Sandhu said in the letter. Name of the institution in which the student is enrolled and the mode of education — regular, distance or part-time — must also be “inscribed” on his or her academic certificates, the commission said. “lt is important that these details are mentioned correctly on academic certificates which are used by students throughout their lives for various purposes and ends. I would be glad if you (vice chancellors) immediately implement these suggestions in the interests of students in particular and system of higher education in general,” Sandhu said.

The directive comes after the UGC, at its recent meeting, approved a proposal for strengthening the security features of academic certificates.
