Last Updated 23 March 2017, 20:33 IST

Mayor G Padmavathi on Thursday inaugurated, Pakshi Dhaama (home for birds) boasting of 121 varieties of birds at Yediyur in Jayanagar. At least 40 species of migratory birds visit Yediyur lake from different parts of the world like Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Some of the migratory birds that are seen here are wood sand piper, Temminck's stints, Osprey, Northern Shoveller, common teal, White Wagtail, black-tailed Godwit, Gargeny and Rosy Pastors.

To make these birds feel safe, a bio-diversity bird wall and bio-diversity bird tower has been constructed. As a result, the fast disappearing sparrows have returned to this place in good numbers. Cages housing a variety of parakeets and love birds have also be provided.

Padmavathi said, “We must protect our water bodies to invite the fast disappearing birds. Corporators of other wards should also work to protect water bodies and create space for birds.”

Padmanabhanagar MLA R Ashoka said, “The work at Yediyur lake is worth emulating.”
