A feast from the North

Last Updated 14 April 2017, 18:51 IST

The word ‘Gufha’ in English means ‘cave’ and you will feel like you have entered one as you step inside the North Indian restaurant at The President Hotel, Jayanagar. The restaurant, which goes by the same name, has dimly lit interiors adorned with hanging lanterns and wooden seating appropriately designed as per the theme. Figures of tribals are carved on the walls, giving one a feeling of being welcomed by them.

The attire of the staff also matches with the concept of the place and they happily hand out the niche menu to you as you get seated.

The low lighting may be a bit of a deterrent for those who prefer a bright ambience, but the food more than makes up for the lack of it (if you so feel).

Coming to the menu, there is a wide choice of cocktails and mocktails that make for a refreshing sip. Incase you’d like to give that a miss and start the experience with the food menu, there are soups like ‘Dal shorba’, ‘Tamatar dhaniya shorba’ and ‘Bhutta (corn) mirchi ka shorba’ to warm you up. The ‘Paya shorba’ and ‘Yakhni shorba’ are there to whet the appetite of the non-vegetarians.

In the starters section, there are a number of items in ‘paneer’, ‘aloo’ and other preparations. Go for the ‘Tawa mirch paneer’, ‘Til angari aloo’, ‘Bhutta kalimirch’ or ‘Chutneywaali phool’ to spice up the palate.

If you are in a large group, the platter with assorted items is recommended. Non-vegetarians including seafood lovers also have a lot to choose from.

The main course menu is also vast and varied so you should definitely leave enough space for that. Dishes like ‘Kurchari paneer’ and ‘Achari paneer tikka masala’ are sure to please those fond of ‘paneer’.

Then there are other items like ‘Champakali kofta curry’, ‘Sabji ka bagheecha’ and ‘Tawa makai’ (corn-based) to go with a number of ‘rotis’ and ‘naans’. The ‘Afghani subzi pulao’ also makes for a nice option. Once again, non-vegetarians need not worry for there’s more than they could ask for.

A good meal is certainly incomplete without some great dessert. So in that section, there are traditional delights like ‘Khubani ka meetha’ (cooked apricot with rich cream and nuts), ‘Litchi rabdi’, ‘Zaffrani angoori rasmalai’, ‘Angari jamoon’ and ‘Special kulfi with falooda’.

The place is slightly on the expensive side but the distinct taste of each of the dishes does justice to that. The unique ambience is an added attraction. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner. ‘Gufha’ is located at The President Hotel, 79/8, Diagonal Road, 3rd Block, Jayanagar. For details, call 49652973.
