Kannur becomes first district to achieve total primary education

Kannur (Kerala), Mar 28 (PTI)

Kannur is all set to become the first Indian district to achieve total primary education, with over 90 per cent of the population in the age group of 15-50 acquiring education upto fourth class or equivalent, the state literacy mission has said.

Combined efforts by political parties, civic bodies, voluntary organisations and the state literacy mission has made the campaign, launched in 2007, successful with women constituting nearly 80 per cent of them.The mission has covered workers, neo-literates, early school dropouts and even prison inmates.

According to State Literacy Mission, a formal declaration on this achievement is to be made in April as a national event.So far, 24,545 learners from 81 village panchayats, 9 block panchayats and 6 municipal towns have participated in the mission. Of these, 38 panchayats, 3 municipalities and two block panchayats have already made a formal declaration and the rest would make announcements before mid-April, the mission said.
