Child panel notice to DPI over plaints on summer classes

Last Updated 27 April 2017, 18:48 IST

The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights will issue a notice to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) on Friday, asking its officials to ensure schools do not conduct remedial classes or coaching classes for children during the summer vacation.

“Across the world, children have summer holidays and the reason is that children can’t bear the heat. We have received complaints from parents saying children feel demotivated because of such remedial classes during summer holidays,” said Kripa Alva, chairperson of the commission.

She said it was a violation of the child’s rights. The commission has emulated a similar order issued by the child rights commission in Kerala. KSCPCR will issue the circular to the DPI on Friday morning.

The Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) has written a letter to the Commissioner of Public Instruction, objecting to the commission’s recommendation.

The letter says no private unaided school in Karnataka conducts school during April and May, except remedial classes for students who are weak in academics and for Class 10 students for a short duration. It says this is in the best interest of students and the department may take action if schools are found to be charging extra fee for the same or conducting classes for the entire duration of the holidays.
