Labourer gets 10-year RI for raping minor

A City Civil and Sessions court on Friday sentenced a construction worker to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him of Rs 5,000 after convicting him of raping a 13-year-old mentally challenged girl.

In August 2014, the convict Shanmugam went to the house of the victim in Srirampuram after her mother and grandmother had left for work and, raped her. Her family members who returned home found the girl disturbed. On questioning, the victim narrated the ordeal. Following a complaint by the victim’s family, the police arrested Shanmugam and filed a charge sheet against him.

Judge Rajeshwari N Hegde directed the legal services authority to discuss the matter with the state government and take measures to rehabilitate the victim.
