Quenching their thirst

from here & there

Summer is here and water is a precious resource for everybody. And for birds and animals, who often can’t find enough water resources to quench their thirst, it is highly necessary to put solid measures in place. And that is exactly what The WaterBowl Project in Bengaluru does. The brainchild of Sanjana Govindan Jayadev, the Water Bowl Project aims to quench the thirst of birds and animals in summer.

“Four years ago, I observed that birds and animals were not getting sufficient water to drink during summer. So, I started keeping bowls of water in front of the house. As I was researching on this issue online, I got the idea of a ‘water bowl project’ for the animals,” explains Sanjana. “For the first time, I kept water near the Siddapur nursery in Bengaluru. Dogs, cats and birds started thronging the place for water,” recalls Sanjana.

After this, Sanjana shared this  idea with her friends and other like-minded people. The project was later crowdfunded with support from Wishberry. After gathering enough resources, Sanjana started distributing bowls to people. At a later stage, Sunil, who had a similar bent of mind, joined hands with her.

“Initially, we distributed cement bowls. But eventually, keeping environmental concerns in mind, we shifted to earthen bowls. These bowls keep water cool and are easy to clean,” says Sanjana. In the coming days, they have plans to start environment-friendly activities with the help of teachers and students. For details, visit www.facebook.com/WaterbowlprojectBangalore.
