Last Updated 16 May 2017, 10:46 IST

Ace shuttler PV Sindhu will soon be joining the Andhra Pradesh state cadre as Deputy Collector as the government on Tuesday made necessary amendments to the concerned Act in a special session in Amaravati called for passing the GST bill . With this, Sindhu may get the appointment orders within a couple of weeks, after Governor ESL Narasimhan gives his nod to the amendments.

Besides the job offer, the government gave her Rs 3 crore as cash prize and a 1,000 square yard residential plot in Amaravati after she won silver medal for the country in Rio Olympics. At present, Sindhu is working as a Deputy Manager in Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) here. The 22 year old shuttler lives in Hyderabad and gets training at the Pullela Gopichand Academy.

“Sindhu has shown extraordinary grit at the Olympics. The state government on its part is trying to honour her in our own way by offering her Deputy Collector post. The earlier governments have neglected sports in the state, but we will do our best to retain talent,” Chief Minister Naidu said while passing the amendments to state Public Services Commission Act facilitating Sindhu’s appointment. Naidu s’ government also offered a 10 acre plot in Amaravati for Pullela to set up a Badminton Academy.

According to Sindhu’s mother Vijaya she will take up the job with the AP government. Sindhu preferred AP to Telangana even as the Telangana government offered her similar kind of job. A fortnight ago the chief minister of Telangana, K Chandrasekhar Rao handed over a 1,000 square-yard plot in the up market Shaikpet area. KCR also presented her a cash reward of Rs. 5 crore immediately after she returned from RIO.

However the YSR Congress party legislators deplored the state government for taking time to pass amendment to the Act for Sindhu while denying time for discussing problems faced by farmers in the state. “It is unfortunate that the TDP government which has time to pass the GST bill and Job for sports person has no time for farmers committing suicide in the state,” YSRC MLA Roja said.
