With an aim to promote the idea of oral storytelling tradition among children, Rajasthan's Education Department will invite grandmothers of students for storytelling sessions to be held government schools.

As per a recent order released by  the department of secondary education, schools are asked to organise informal storytelling sessions for class 1st-5th. The initiative  attempts to revive an age old tradition of narrating stories to children by their grandparents.  Arun Kumar Sharma, deputy director, secondary education further explained, "the story telling session will be a part of  Bal Sabhas, organised every Saturday in schools. Apart from performing cultural activities now students will get an opportunity to listen stories from grandmothers of their friends."

The education department has already issued notices to schools and is keen to start the session from third Saturday of this month. Department is hopeful to have successful Bal Sabhas. "we could have asked teachers to tell stories to children but idea is to find a story teller in their own grandparent. This will encourage students to listen to more stories while they are at home. As we are promoting technology in schools this program is a reverse of that." Sharma added.

Educationists have welcome the idea  but they believe there should be a list of certain stories that will be narrated to students and stories should be non religious and non political.  "Such initiatives are much needed at the present time when technology has infiltrated our lives. Children will get Moral education and affection while listening tales from grandparents. Its a easiest way to touch, teach and reach a student. But department should ensure that stories selected for the session will have no religious or political affiliation", Educationist and Social Activist Charanjeet Dhillon, associated with Bal Bhawan Jaipur told DH.

As per the order department will also provide some sample stories to the schools. And in absense of Grandmothers, teachers will be asked to narrate the stories.
