Keep your options open

The IIT-JEE Main exam that was held over a month ago saw 10.2 lakh students across India taking the test.

The competitive entrance exam is held for those students who are keen to bag a seat in one of the premier engineering institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Until 2016, 40% weightage was given to Class 12 marks for determining ranks in JEE.

From 2017, with no weightage being given to Class 12 results, students are required to fight tooth and nail to secure their golden ticket in one of the IITs.

With engineering being one of the most sought-after careers in India, every year many students attempt the fiercely competitive entrance exam.

This year, while the JEE Main exam was of moderate difficulty, some students found the entire paper tricky and challenging to crack. Instead of stressing out about not making the cut, students should start crafting a back-up plan so that they are left with more options. Here are some tips that can help you develop your plan: 

n Apply to other institutions: While you may not be content with your JEE Main results, this is not the time to sulk and cry over spilt milk. Instead, consider applying to other institutes as there are many that absorb students through JEE scores.

n Attempt other entrance exams: Consider writing other national, state and college level entrance exams. The level of difficulty in these entrance exams may vary, but there is no harm in attempting multiple tests. However, there are certain parameters that students should consider before finalising on their choice of college such as well-equipped libraries and laboratories, and a qualified faculty. Students should also apply only to institutes that are accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) or National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

n Skip a year: Often, skipping an academic year is not advisable, as students tend to feel lethargic and overconfident about their preparations. However, if you are confident of your abilities, and entering an IIT is your aim, then there is no looking back. This time, chart a different study plan and seek proper advice and guidance from professors. Get involved in the preparations again with complete dedication.

However, there are chances you may feel saddened or anxious. Take time out from your schedule to pursue an alternative course such as learning a new language.

n Apply to universities abroad: There are several foreign universities that provide quality engineering studies with assured campus placements and training facilities.

Therefore, if you are uncertain of a good college in India, then consider study options abroad. Before planning to pursue an engineering career abroad, it is essential to go through the course structure, employment options, accessibility, long-term plans, fee structure and the medium of instruction.
