Women volunteers to build check dams in five places in Dakshina Kannada

Members of self-help group and Sthree Shakthi Sangha will script history in the conservation of water in Dakshina Kannada by building five check dams. These check dams will come up at five places in Bantwal, Sullia and Belthangady taluks. The dams will come up at five places in the taluks.

Ten women will work on a check dam that will come up at Nethila Kodi of Naringana Gram Panchayat in Bantwal taluk, at an estimated cost of Rs 3.75 lakh. The check dam will be 4-metre wide and 1.5-metre deep. In Sullia, the dam will be constructed at Budleguthu village in Kanakamajalu at an estimated cost of Rs 4.98 lakh and 15 women will work on it.

Similar dams will come
up at Bajelmar in Charmadi at an estimated cost of Rs 5 lakh, Poonjala in Thanneerupantha Gram Panchayat an estimated cost of Rs 3 lakh and Hasanthadka in Balnadu Gram Panchayat at an estimated cost of Rs 5 lakh where 10 women job card holders will work.

The work on the check dams at Nethilakodi, Budleguthu and Hasanthadka has already begun. Dr M R Ravi, Zilla Panchayat CEO, said that the Zilla Panchayat has initiated a move to empower women. “It is a move to actively engage women in the conservation of water resources.

This will also be a role model for others. The Zilla Panchayat will extend all kinds of support to make this initiative successful. Although only five check dams have been planned now, the Zilla Panchayat will consider if more women groups come forward to take up such initiative,” he added.
