Several parts of the city, especially east Bengaluru, plunged into darkness on Wednesday evening for almost five hours as rain lashed the city. The showers, however, came as a relief as they brought down the temperature.

Bescom helpline 1912 was flooded with grievance calls while many complained that they were getting only busy tones on the phone lines. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) control room too started receiving calls related to power cuts, said a staffer in the Palike.

Bescom officials said most of the calls came from Fraser Town, Indiranagar, Lalbagh, J P Nagar, Uttarahalli besides other parts of the city.

Bescom sources said control cables were burnt at the Hoodi 400 kVA power station on Wednesday evening, resulting in the blackout. Officials were busy replacing the cables and said it would take at least four hours to restore power supply, they said.

Sources also said transformers were damaged by rain at the Hoodi station in the afternoon rain. “They were replaced by evening. But the new transformers were damaged again as a fresh spell of rain lashed the area after 8 pm,” they said.

“We have been reeling in the dark for over four and half hours now. We tried calling the Bescom helpline, but we are only getting a busy tone. We also tried calling our area Assistant Engineer (AE) and Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), but there was no response,” said Jeta Ramesh, a resident of Fraser Town.

Tree falls were reported from several places, including Majestic, Coles Park, Basaveshwara Nagar, Sultanpalya, Orion Mall and Commercial Street. As reports came in, BBMP staff rushed to the spot to clear the roads. However, there were no reports of injuries or damage to properties.
