Conditions favourable for advancement of monsoon

Last Updated 22 May 2017, 20:10 IST

The IMD on Monday said that conditions are becoming favourable for further advance of Southwest monsoon, which is expected to hit the region in a few days.

“An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean, and extends between 1.5 km to 3.1 km above mean sea level,” said Dr S Balachandran, deputy director general of meteorology.

“With the development of this upper air cyclonic circulation, conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest monsoon into some more parts of Southwest bay, Southeast bay and Eastcentral bay during subsequent two to three days,” he added.

Balachandran said even before the setting of monsoon, rainfall occurred at a few places over Kerala, Lakshadweep and at isolated places in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, coastal and south interior Karnataka.

The latest weather bulletin said there will be some respite from heatwave conditions in Tamil Nadu.
