KIA second most accessible airport among metros: study

Last Updated 22 May 2017, 20:15 IST

A study has rated Hyderabad and Bengaluru airports as the most accessible in the six metro cities while the airport in the national capital has occupied the bottom place.

“Benchmarking of Accessibility and Connectivity of Indian Airports”, conducted by New Delhi-based School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) showed that the two south Indian airports occupied the top slots.

The accessibility rate was calculated in the study conducted by SPA student Amal Jose under the guidance of Senior Professor (Transport Planning) Dr Sewa Ram by taking the average time taken during non-peak and peak traffic.

“One of the reasons why Bengaluru is faring better is because the airport is located on the outskirts of the city. So, once you leave the city, you will get a good speed. Hyderabad tops the list mainly because of the dedicated corridor to the airport,” Dr Sewa Ram told DH.

Though Delhi fares better in overall connectivity, largely due to the huge volume of air traffic, reaching the airport is a task.

Delhi also finds itself in the last position in the study of 60 metro and non-metro airports in terms of accessibility, while Hyderabad is at third position, Bengaluru seven, Chennai 46 and Kolkata 59.

The study finds that travelling to the airport by car is the best option in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, among the metros.

During non-peak traffic hours, reaching the Bengaluru airport from city centre Shivaji Nagar takes 39 minutes while it takes 57 minutes during peak traffic. Bengaluru, at 46.2%, has the least variation in the time taken during non-peak and peak traffic hours, while it is 145.2% in Delhi.

The connectivity to airport through public transport is better in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru compared to New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.

While a vehicle can maintain an average speed of 35.1 kmph en route to the Hyderabad airport from the city centre, it comes down to 28.4 kmph in Bengaluru and 23.5 kmph in Chennai. The average speed is 21.4 kmph in Mumbai, 20.2 kmph in Kolkata and 20.1 kmph in
Delhi.
