Stating that security forces are ready to face the challenge of infiltration along the Line of Control, Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday said that 90 militants are active in northern parts of the Valley.

“Around 90 militants are active in north Kashmir, comprising Bandipora, Baramulla and Kupwara districts," Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Muneer Khan told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Sopore, 52 kms from here.

He revealed that infiltration attempts from across the LoC were on, "but we have no reports that there is enhanced infiltration." "The army is ready to face the challenge of infiltration along the LoC," the IGP said.

Khan's predecessor Syed Javed Gillani in his last press conference as IGP Kashmir on May 8 had said that 95 local youths have joined militant ranks in the Valley since last year, while a total of 200 militants were active in Kashmir. Gillani had said that the situation was normal in central and north Kashmir areas and had termed pockets in south Kashmir as challenge for the security forces.

Khan also revealed that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) team, which is currently in the Valley questioning some separatist leaders for allegedly taking money for fuelling protests, has not approached the police so far for assistance. “In case they (NIA) approach us for assistance, we will consider and help them accordingly,” he said.

The IGP appealed the students to end the protests and focus on education. “Education is imperative for all. Students must not waste their precious time as the education is must for everyone whether one wants to become a doctor, engineer or a businessman,” he said.

“I appeal to the parents and teachers to counsel the students properly so that they can concentrate on their academics,” he said
