Palaniswami to meet PM

Last Updated 23 May 2017, 19:00 IST

Amid the BJP’s attempts to seek the support of the warring factions of the AIADMK ahead of the presidential polls, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

The meeting, which will take place in New Delhi, will see the leaders discuss the political situation in the state, among other things. Palaniswami’s visit to New Delhi assumes significance as it comes a few days after AIADMK rebel leader

O Panneerselvam met Modi and asked him to provide funds to resolve the issue of lack of drinking water in the state caused by deficit rain.

The chief minister’s visit also comes soon after senior BJP leader and Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu met Palaniswami at the state secretariat on May 14.

Though the meeting was termed official, sources in the ruling AIADMK said Naidu’s move was the first step to get the chief minister’s support for the presidential elections.

The BJP is first targeting the AIADMK camp led by Palaniswami, as it holds a majority in the state Assembly with the support of 122 MLAs.
