IMD forecasts rain, strong winds

The city on Monday night not only witnessed thundershowers, but also experienced squalls, with winds blowing at 56 kmph.

This is the second time in three days that the city experienced squalls and thundershowers.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials, the squall was reported at 4.15 pm and 9.45 pm on Monday. The maximum wind speed of 57 kmph was recorded at 4.30 pm at HAL Airport. Winds blowing in the city at 4.15 pm were in the northerly direction, while the wind blowing at HAL airport side was south easterly in direction.

The city received 28.8 mm rainfall till Tuesday morning, while HAL airport recorded 7.8 mm and Kempegowda International Airport received 6 mm rainfall. According to IMD officials, the city received the maximum ainfall between 10 pm and 11 pm with 22 mm.

IMD has forecast thundershowers, coupled with squalls for the next three days. Sunder M Methri, IMD Bengaluru, director-in-charge said these were pre-monsoon showers and the factors are such that the city and most parts of south interior Karnataka will experience rainfall and strong winds during evening and night.

An upper air cyclonic circulation over south east Bay of Bengal and low pressure over Telangana and Rayalseema are responsible for the city experiencing thundershowers during evening and nights, said another IMD official.

 IMD has issued a warning of thunderstorms and gusty winds for the next two days over districts of coastal and south interior Karnataka.

Power cuts

Following thundershowers, Bescom on Monday night received 3,563 complaints of which 2,320 complaints are pending.

They had received 1,529 complaints from the south zone, 979 from east, 501 from north and 554 complaints from west Bengaluru. The maximum number of complaints were received from HSR Layout (720), followed by Indiranagar (667), Jayanagar (455) and Koramanagala (354).
