Rain lashes North, Central K'taka

Heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, thunder and lightning, lashed several parts of the state on Tuesday and brought respite to people from the heat wave.

Shivamogga, Bhadravathi, Shikaripur, Hosanagar, Thirthahalli and Sagar received a good spell of rain about 40 minutes in the evening. The rain which started around 6.45 pm in Shivamogga continued for more than 30 minutes. Several roads in the city were waterlogged. The situation was similar in the other towns in the district. Motorists had a tough time negotating  waterlogged roads. After a brief lull, it rained again in various parts of the district at night. Power supply was disrupted in some parts of the district.   

Meanwhile, heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, lashed Gadag town for half an hour after four days on Tuesday evening. The weather was cloudy for the last four days and the residents were fed up with the sweltering heat. The rain cooled the town.

Mundargi, Mulgund and Nargund received rain for about 15 minutes. Agricultural activities have picked up pace in rural areas of the district following pre-monsoon showers.

Various parts of Uttara Kannada district received good rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, thunder and lightning. A 50-year-old shepherd, Hanumanthappa Noolvi, a resident of Majjigeri village in Mundgod taluk, was struck by lightning, when he had gone to the fields to graze his sheep. The roofs of two houses flew away at Subhashnagar in Karwar. Sirsi, Siddapur and Bhatkal received heavy rain, while Yellapur received moderate rain.

After a week’s gap, heavy rain lashed Dharwad city and the rural areas on Wednesday evening. Accompanied by gusty winds and lightning, rain pounded the city for more than two hours. Trees were uprooted at several places. Near Court Circle, a huge tree fell on a garage completely destroying it. Pathan, who was stuck in the garage, sustained injuries. A huge tree was uprooted on Station Road, leading to a traffic jam.

Several roads in the city were inundated and motorists had a tough time. Rainwater gushed into many houses at Jannat Nagar, Hosayellapur and Mankilla. Choked up gutters flooded the vegetable and the fruit markets. The city plunged into darkness and power supply was restored late in the night. Hubballi received scattered rain in the evening. Heavy rain lashed some areas for nearly half-an-hour, accompanied by gusty winds.
