Eight killed as bus, mini bus collide near Honnavar

 Eight people, including members of a marriage party, were killed when the mini bus in which they were travelling collided head-on with a private bus at Anantawadi in the taluk on national highway-66 in the wee hours of Thursday.

Twenty three people suffered injuries in the accident. The victims are Divya Kurdekar, 28, of Davangere (the bride); Rukminamma Krishnappa Shet, 65, of Shigga in Sorab taluk of Shivamogga district; Palakshi Nagaraj Shet, 42, Baby Sunil Shet, 38, Subramanya Sunil Shet, 25, all from Dasanakoppa in Sirsi taluk, Uttara Kannada district; Pooja Shet, 24, of Hunagund in Bagalkot district; mini bus driver Nagappa Basappa Ganiger, 44; private bus (VRL) driver Umesh Valmiki, 35, of Bankapur, Shiggaon taluk, Haveri district.

The marriage party was on its way from Dasanakoppa to Dharmasthala, Dakshina Kannada district, for the marriage of Divya with Harish Shet of Dasanakoppa at the Manjunatheshwara temple, when the accident occurred. The bus was on its way from Mangaluru to Honnavar. Harish is among those injured who are undergoing treatment in Udupi and Kundapur. The bride and the groom were in courtship for some years and the marriage was arranged with the consent of both the families.
