Fixing buffer zone for lakes in Bengaluru, NGT asks status report from Karnataka

The National Green Tribunal on Friday directed the Karnataka Government to submit a status report within three weeks on implementation of its earlier order increasing the no-build buffer zone around lakes in Bengaluru from 30 to 75 metres.

The green bench headed by its Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar also asked the state government to submit a report on details of existing building in buffer zones and ongoing construction activities.

The Bench last year ordered by increasing the no build buffer zone around lakes in Bengaluru from 30 metres to 75 metres to protect the water body from encroachment and pollution. Though the Karnataka Government and a group of builders approached the Supreme Court challenging the NGT order, the court refused to stay the order and directed the petitioners including the Karnataka Government to approach the NGT again on the issue.

While challenging the NGT order in the Apex Court, the Karnataka Government had said that the green bench did not take into account that the increase of buffer zone to such an extent would have a substantial adverse impact upon the construction activities in Bengaluru without any corresponding and equivalent benefit to the protection of water bodies/lakes in the city.
