BJP plan fails in Muslim-dominated powerloom town of Malegaon

Last Updated 26 May 2017, 14:12 IST

On a day the Narendra Modi-led NDA government completed three years, the BJP suffered a jolt in the Muslim-dominated powerloom town of Malegaon on Friday where it failed to capture in the corporation elections despite making all efforts including campaign for ban on triple talaq.

The results of the polls to Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC), Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) and Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) were declared on Friday which in totality threw up a mixed political scenario.

While Malegaon is located in Nashik district, the other two - Bhiwandi and Panvel are part of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The Panvel victory gives a major thumbs up to the development agenda of Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

In the newly constituted  78-seat PMC, the BJP won absolute majority by winning 51 seats, followed by Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), Congress 2 and NCP 2. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and the Raj Thackeray-led MNS could not open their account. The PWP has a strong presence in the Raigad district, however, it appeared the Left-dominance is eroding from this costal district. Panvel is very important because it is next to Navi Mumbai satellite township and the entire region would see an investment of nearly Rs 60,000 crore as the new international airport and Naina, a mega township bigger than size of Mumbai is coming up. The proposed trans-harbour link would also ensure direct connectivity with Mumbai.

Reports reaching here from Malegaon, that has 84 seats, said that BJP managed to win nine seats. Here the Congress emerged as the single largest party with 28 followed by NCP 20. The Shiv Sena got 13, Owaisi-brothers led AIMIM bagged 7 and Janata Dal 6. The BJP had fielded 55 candidates including 27 Muslims. There were 16 women candidates. However, none of the women candidates could win despite the triple talaq issue.

In the Muslim-dominated powerloom town Bhiwandi in Thane district, Congress put up a tally of 47 in the 90 member house. The BJP bagged 19 seats, Shiv Sena 12, Samajwadi Party 2 followed by smaller parties and others.
