Last Updated 26 May 2017, 18:43 IST

The students of Maharani’s College Hostel were up in arms against the hostel authorities for not taking measures to supply adequate water. The students staged a flash protest on the hostel premises here on Friday.

The students accused hostel warden Latha of indulging in irregularities, and demanded that she be transferred. The agitating students complained that there was no sufficient water supply in the hostel from the last one-and-a-half months. The water was supplied through tankers only when the students took up the issue with the authorities. As many as 350 students are inconvenienced due to poor facilities, they alleged.

The hostel premises is unhygienic, toilets are in a dilapidated condition and waste collection is not being done on a daily basis. Mosquito menace is rampant and the street dogs stray into the hostel rooms. During admission, the authorities collect Rs 7,500 from each student and also charge Rs 1,500 mess bill per month. If any inmate fail to pay the mess bill, the warden harasses the student as well as the parents, they alleged.

Student died of dengue

The protestors said a student, Sanchita, a native of KR Nagar, died of dengue on Friday. Sanchita was suffering from fever for the past four days and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city. Another three inmates are suffering from dengue and 15 other students are down with fever.

Though the doctors advised them to drink clean water, there was no supply of clean and safe water, they alleged.
