Suvana shines bright

Swimmer sets new mark in 200M backstroke

Suvana Baskar of Dolphin Aquatics broke a 12-year-old record at the State Junior and Sub-junior Aquatic Championships at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre (BAC) on Thursday.

On the penultimate day of the meet that saw six meet records being set, Suvana stood out with her fine show in the Group II, 200M backstroke final. She won the gold in 2:32.78, a new State mark. The Dolphin Aquatics’ trainee bettered the previous best of 2:34.38 set by Madhavi Giri of KCR in 2005.

In Group I, Riddhi Bohra of Pooja Aquatics won the 50M breaststroke. She obliterated the previous best of 35.70 seconds set by Charu Hamsini of BAC in 2015.

In Group II of the same event, Rachana SR Rao of Mangala Swimming Club, Mangaluru won the gold in record time. She touched the pad in 37.03 seconds, 0.10 seconds faster than the previous best of 37.13 seconds set by Saloni Dalal in 2015.

Later in the day, Dolphin Aquatics’ Nina Venkatesh won the Group III, 50M butterfly in 31.25 seconds. She bettered the previous mark of 31.42 seconds set by V Shivaranjani in 2001.

Meanwhile in the boys’ finals, Tanish Mathew and Srihari Natraj won top prizes in record time.
Tanish was the fastest in Group II, 50M butterfly, winning the race in 27.13 seconds. He obliterated the record set by Ashwin Kumar BH at 28.37 seconds.

Srihari won the Group I, 200M backstroke in 2:07.80 minutes. He bettered the previous best of 2:13.49 by Aravind Mani in 2013.
