When in Karnataka, try to learn Kannada, says CM

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday appealed to non-Kannadigas to try and learn Kannada besides speaking their mother tongue.

Siddaramaiah was speaking at the inauguration of V K Obaidulla Model Government Primary School at Shivajinagar. The school has been built by IMA Council at a cost of Rs 16 crore.

Speaking in broken Urdu, the chief minister said, “Mujhe Urdu Nahi Ata hai. Thoda Thoda Ata Hai. Galat Bahut Hai.”He then turned to Urban Development Minister Roshan Baig saying he was yet to gain command over Kannada whereas Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait speaks the language fluently. The chief minister said, “We have no objection if people speak Tamil, Telugu, English, Urdu or any other language but learning Kannada is a must. It is the language of the state.”

He said the state government will appoint Kannada teachers in all government schools including Urdu schools so that everyone learns Kannada. He hailed the IMA Council for investing on building school infrastructure. The chief minister pointed out to the various measures taken by the state government for the welfare of minorities in the state. He said the budgetary allocation for minorities has been enhanced from Rs 265 crore to Rs 2,750 crore. As a result, 14 lakh students are receiving scholarship.

‘Pave way for Ruman Baig’
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah used the occasion to advise Baig to contest the Lok Sabha election and pave way for his son Ruman Baig to enter the Vidhana Soudha as MLA.
