A professor of English at Gulbarga University, who was booked by police for “misbehaving” with a woman during the interview for PhD admission, was arrested on Friday.

Prof Ramesh Rathod was arrested by the Gulbarga University police. A local court has remanded him in judicial custody, Kalaburagi Deputy Superintendent of Police S S Hullur told DH.

Curiously, police also arrested the head of the English department, Prof V R Badiger, on the basis of a complaint filed by Rathod. Badiger was also remanded in judicial custody. Rathod had filed a police complaint against him, accusing him of hatching a “conspiracy” to malign him and sending old students to “assault” him. Hullur further said police had submitted a report on the matter to the Vice Chancellor, S R Niranjana.

Both Rathod and Badiger have been suspended by the university with immediate effect until the issue is resolved. A decision to this effect was taken at a syndicate meeting chaired by the vice chancellor on Friday, Registrar (Administration) Dayanand Agasar told this newspaper.
