Bombs in tomb baffle Kerala cops

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Apr 2, DHNS:

In a bizarre turn to the culture of political violence in Kannur district, three steel bombs were recovered from the tomb of an RSS activist at Muzhappilangad near Thalassery on Thursday.

The bombs were lodged inside the tomb of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)  activist Sooraj who was murdered by alleged Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) workers in 2005. Muzhappilangad panchayat president V Prabhakaran and seven other CPM activists are accused in the murder case the trial of which is yet to begin.

Coincidentally, the bombs were found by Prabhakaran and other CPM leaders while paying tributes to a CPM worker who was killed by alleged Sangh activists. The police who were called in split open the tomb after taking permission from Sooraj’s parents. They later defused the three steel bombs which were lodged in the corners of the tomb.

Police suspect that the bombs were kept there to ward off political rivals from vandalising the tomb. Sources said that four years ago, suspected CPM activists had destroyed the same tomb following which it was repaired.

The bombs were suspected to have been placed to pre-empt destruction of memorials by political rivals of the victims. Over 500 activists belonging to the CPM and the RSS have perished in the last three decades to mindless violence in certain pockets of Kannur district.

CPM Kannur district secretary P Sasi has demanded that the police should also search temples as RSS activists have been hiding weapons and bombs there.
