Last Updated 20 June 2017, 18:48 IST
The Traffic Automation Enforcement Centre was inaugurated at Mangaluru East Traffic Police Station in Kadri on Tuesday, to keep an eye on traffic violations and traffic congestions on main roads and junctions in Mangaluru.

DCP (Crime and Traffic) Hanumantharaya said that under the project M Track-2 project, Traffic Automation Enforcement Centre will be installed in all districts.

The centre is facilitated with a monitoring system enabling the department to track the movement of vehicles in 30 new locations at once. The locations are provided 75 CCTV cameras, in addition to the earlier cameras installed at 51 locations. Live footage can be viewed and recorded with the new system. In case of traffic violations, the information of the violators will be fed into the system and slips can be generated at the centre.

Based on the vehicle registration number, the slips will be posted to the address of the vehicle owners. There are 16 hand-held devices, enabling traffic police to collect fine on the spot.

These devices too are connected to the automation centre. The fine could be paid at the Kadri Traffic Police Station, Mangalore One Centres, or at the mini automation centres in Surathkal and Pandeshwar. Under the new system, the police staff at the centre can register cases for signal jumping, hit and run or rash driving, by viewing the footages, the DCP explained.

Further, the computers at the centre will be linked to the RTO Vahan software. The details of vehicles that violate rules will be uploaded on the software to help generate the slips at the centre.

The machines at the automation enforcement centre have been installed at a cost of Rs 60.5 lakh and the CCTV cameras have been installed at a cost of Rs 79.29 lakh. Additional CCTVs will be installed under smart city programme, he added.

DCP (Law and Order) Shantaraju inaugurated the centre. ACP Uday Nayak, ACP Shruthi N S, ACP Thilakchandra and others were present during the occasion.
