Aakarshi, Lakshya advance

Badminton All-India Juniors : Top seeds have it easy; Karnataka's Kriti, Ashwini in round of 32

Top seed Aakarshi Kashyap of Chhattisgarh produced a dominant performance to advance to the round of 32 in the All-India Junior Ranking Badminton tournament at the KBA courts here on Thursday.

Aakarshi thumped unseeded Sheethal D of Karnataka 21-9, 21-6 in an under-19 girls’ singles round of 64 clash.

Karnataka’s Kriti Bharadwaj and Ashwini Bhat K also made progress after recording contrasting wins in their respective matches.

Kriti made short work of Thanushree R of Tamil Nadu 21-18, 21-9 while Ashwini rallied from a game down to upset Andhra Pradesh’s Akshita A, seeded 15th, 20-22, 21-19, 21-10.

Third seed Ira Sharma of Haryana too made her way into the round of 32 after powering past Kerala’s Anugraha 21-11, 21-14.

Maharashtra’s Deepthi Ramesh advanced after beating Bhargavi K 21-16, 20-22, 21-14 in a hard fought tie.

Deepthi began well and clinched the first game without much trouble but Bhargavi made a good comeback to secure the second in her favour. Bhargavi had no answers in the third as Deepthi overpowered her way to a comfortable victory.

Vaidehi Choudhari, seeded eighth, brushed aside Divyanshi Sharma 21-13, 21-17.  
Meanwhile in the under-19 boys’ singles round of 64, it was all too easy for top seed Lakshya Sen of Uttarakhand who breezed past unseeded Ishaan Bhatnagar of Chhattisgarh 21-14, 21-5.
