Bengaluru to be developed as smart city

Bengaluru is among the 30 cities shortlisted on Friday for development under the Smart Cities project. So far Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Davangere and Belagavi have already found their place in the Smart Cities Mission for Karnataka.

Announcing the new list of cities to be developed under the NDA Government's ambitious project, Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu said these 30 cities will now have to prepare their individual project reports on ways to spruce up and for modalities to raise the funds for urban enclaves.

Only 10 cities have to be selected by urban development ministry to complete its target of 100 to provide them with modern infrastructure for better living.

Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala topped the challenge to come into the list of 30. The other cities selected are: Naya Raipur in Chhattisgarh, Rajkot in Gujarat, Amravati in Andhra Pradesh, Patna and Muzaffarpur in Bihar, Karimnagar in Telangana, Puducherry, Gandhinagar in Gujarat, Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, Karnal in Haryana, Satna in Madhya Pradesh, Bengaluru in Karnataka, Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, Dehradun in Uttarakhand, Tirupur in Tamil Nadu, Pimpri Chinchwad in Maharashtra, Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu in J&K, Dahod in Gujarat, Tirunelveli, Thootukkudi and Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, Aizawl in Mizoram, Allahabad and Aligarh in U.P. and Gangtok in Sikkim.

Total investment:
A total investment of Rs. 57,393 crore is expected to be incurred on upgrading these 30 cities, said Naidu. Vying for the remaining 10 spots are - Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh, Biharsharif in Bihar, Diu in Daman & Diu, Silvassa in Dadra and Nager Haveli, Kavaratti in Lakshadweep, Navi Mumbai, Greater Mumbai and Amaravati in Maharashtra, Imphal in Manipur, Shillong in Meghalaya, Dindigul and Erode in Tamil Nadu, Bidhannagar, Durgapur and Haldia in West Bengal, Meerut, Rai Bareilly, Ghaziabad, Saharanpur and Rampur in U.P. - would have to compete.
