Cops open fire as murder suspect attempts to flee

 The police shot at and injured a murder suspect, after he went berserk and attacked two constables, throwing stones at them in an unsuccessful escape bid in HAL area on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred when he was being taken for mahazar (spot inspection), said the police. The suspect, Johnson John Peter, is a resident of Vibhutipura. He is accused of stabbing a private company employee to death after a robbery.

Johnson robbed a woman of her gold chain on June 10 on Kaggadasapura Main Road. Sri Sai Charan (22), a local resident, who witnessed the robbery, caught him after a chase. However, Johnson stabbed Charan with a dagger. Charan sustained severe internal bleeding and died a while later at Bowring hospital. The police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the victim’s mother.

Based on the CCTV footage from nearby areas, the police picked up Johnson at Vibhutipura on Friday evening. During the spot inspection, the suspect attacked constables- Kantharaj and Manjesh and tried to escape, said the police.

Police inspector Sadique Pasha directed him to surrender. However, he threw stones at constables. Pasha opened fire at Johnson and injured his leg.
