Seven persons, including a tourist couple and their two children from New Delhi, died when a cable car came crashing down from a height of at least 100 feet after derailing from a pulley at famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Sunday.

Officials said the cable car crashed after a tree fell on the ropeway and snapped it. They said the tree was uprooted due to strong winds.

Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Baramulla Imtiyaz Hussain while confirming the incident said four tourists and three locals were killed in the incident. "One of the injured is in critical condition. The dead include a Delhi couple and their two children," he told DH.

The tourist family belonged to Delhi's Shalimar Bagh and have been identified as Jayant Andraskar, his wife Manshea Andraskar and their two daughters - Anagha and Janhvi, Hussain said and added that at least 100 people stranded in cable cars on the ropeway have been rescued.

"All the tourists have been rescued and the cable is being restored to get the cars running again," the SSP said.

The gondola lift at Gulmarg believed to be the world’s second highest cable car, ferries passengers to a height of 4,100 metres (13,450 feet) for panoramic views of the snow-clad Himalayas. The cable car carries tourists in the Pirpanjal mountain range in the western Himalayas.

Since its inauguration in 1998, it is the first of its kind of incident in the Gulmarg cable car service, which was built by the French firm Pomalgalski. The cable car has the capacity ferry 600 people in one hour.
