The Sargur police in HD Kote taluk of Mysuru district on Monday arrested Mahadevamma and Gurusiddegowda, parents of Shobha (19) on the charge of ‘honour killing’ of their daughter.

SP Ravi D Chanannavar said the two had killed Shobha on April 29 and performed her last rites claiming that she committed suicide by consuming poison.

Shobha was in love with Krishna, a boy from another community. The girl’s parents were against the relationship. After learning about the love affair in January, Shobha’s parents shifted her to her uncle’s house in Mutta in HD Kote taluk. On April 23, Krishna and Shobha met at a function in Sargur and decided to elope. But, both were caught by Gurusiddegowda at Mullur gate on the same day. Gowda and his four accomplices attacked the couple and forcibly took away Shobha with them.

Krishna had lodged a complaint on April 24, stating that Shobha had been missing for the past two months and suspected honour killing. The SP said that on April 29 Shobha picked a quarrel with her parents and in a fit of rage Gurusiddegowda assaulted her as a result of which she died. The family left the village following the incident.
