Modi to visit Israel next month

Last Updated 28 June 2017, 20:23 IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Israel between July 4 and 6 on an invitation from his counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Ministry of External Affairs and the Israel Embassy in New Delhi simultaneously announced the prime minister’s visit on Wednesday.

Modi will be the first Indian prime minister to visit Israel. President Pranab Mukherjee visited Israel in October 2015, also the first by a President of India. Unlike Mukherjee, Modi will not visit Palestine before or after his tour of Israel.

“During the visit, the prime minister will have detailed discussions with Prime Minister Netanyahu on all matters of mutual interest and will also call on President Reuven Rivlin,” said Gopal Baglay, MEA spokesperson. Baglay said Modi will pay homage to Indian soldiers at the Indian cemetery in Haifa and address the Indian community at Tel Aviv.

“India established diplomatic relations with Israel in 1992 and since then, the relationship has evolved into a multi-dimensional partnership. This year both countries are commemorating 25 years of diplomatic relations, and the visit of the prime minister will provide an impetus for deeper bilateral engagement in areas of mutual interests,” said Baglay.
