Homecoming of sorts for Justice Lokur

Justice Lokur hails from Athani in the Belgaum district and comes from a highly respected family of judges, his father and grandfather were high court judges.

Currently, acting CJ of Delhi High Court, Justice Lokur, however, is more a Delhiite as he has been based here for a long time. Born on December 31, 1953, he did his early schooling in Delhi and later in Allahabad, but came back to Delhi to graduate from the prestigious  St Stephen’s College.

Vast experience

He practised in the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court. Having a vast experience in civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue and service laws, he was appointed as Additional Solicitor General of India in 1998. He continued in that post till he became an Additional Judge of Delhi HC in 1999. He was elevated as the acting CJ of the Delhi HC in February, 2010.
Justice Lokur’s father, Justice Bhimrao Lokur was law secretary in the Union Law ministry and later judge of the Allahabad HC.

Justice Bhimrao Lokur’s father, Justice N B Lokur was a district judge in Dharwad and later served in Pune and became a judge in the Bombay High Court.

The library in the JSS Law College in Dharwad is named after Justice N B Lokur. Lokur is the name of a village in Dharwad district, as well.

“Justice N B Lokur was a respected figure in the Mumbai-Karnataka region”, Supreme Court advocate Mohan Katarki told Deccan Herald.
