Bengaluru continues to lead in IT jobs: survey

Last Updated 04 July 2017, 19:36 IST
Despite the looming job cuts in information technology (IT), Bengaluru still leads other Indian cities in employment opportunities in the sector, a research survey by a New Delhi-based talent development firm has concluded.

The availability of jobs offered in software and allied services was the highest in the city at 30%. The study by Youth4work.com found that the other leading cities for IT jobs were: Hyderabad (19%), Delhi (17%) and Ahmedabad (12%). The opportunities were relatively low in Mumbai and Chennai at only 11%.

The research indicated that IT jobs, once confined to Bengaluru and Hyderabad, were now diffusing to other cities as well. Besides, IT industries were adapting quickly to global changes through automation and technology upgrades.

But Bengaluru also led in employment opportunities in areas linked to hardware engineering and allied sectors. While the city had 30% of the jobs, Hyderabad (18%), Chennai (17%) and Delhi (17%) came next. However, Mumbai (14%) and Ahmedabad (4%) fared poorer.  Although reports indicate a slight decline in investments in the IT sector, the number of youth/people looking for jobs in these metros is comparatively high in software than in hardware.

Among the youth employed in software jobs, 28% were in Bengaluru, 23% in Hyderabad, 22% in Delhi and 15% in Mumbai. Only 10% of the young engineers were employed in Chennai and 2% in Ahmedabad. Delhi had the maximum people (26%) in hardware jobs. Bengaluru was a close second, employing 24% of the youth. Hyderabad was placed third at 20%.
