'Population explosion is detrimental for progress'
He was speaking after inaugurating a programme on World Population Day organised by the district Health and Family Welfare department, district hospital and Women and Child Welfare department, in association with nursing schools and paramedical colleges at Ambedkar Bhavan in Chikkamagaluru on Tuesday. As per 2011 census, the population of India is 127 crore. India holds the second place in world population after China.
Population explosion has created problems like unemployment and downfall in economical growth. Legal measures should be initiated to control population explosion, he said. In China, government benefits are cut if a family has more than one child. If not controlled, Indian population will outnumber China in 10 years, he said.
IDSG Government Degree College assistant professor C P Narayanaswamy spoke on population explosion. A drama on the ill-effects of population explosion was staged on the occasion.
Zilla panchayat Social Justice Standing Committee president Ravindra Belavadi presided over the programme.
MUDA president Syed Hanif, district surgeon Dr R Doddamallappa, District Family Welfare officer Dr Ashwath Babu, Dr S G Kiran, Dr Balakrishna and Dr Lokesh were present. A rally was taken out from Taluk Office premises to Ambedkar Bhavan, prior to the formal function.
