Yeshwantpur-Hosur local trains can help 8 lakh commuters

The Yeshwantpur-Hosur railway line connects all major IT corridors in southeast Bengaluru and has a potential to reduce traffic congestion.

While it is estimated that running trains with a good frequency on Yeshwantpur-Hosur line will help in shifting more than eight lakh commuters from road to rail, the railways has to fix several problems before running an efficient local train service on the route. “Poor rail infrastructure like single line, no automatic signalling, limited rakes of MEMU/DEMU, non-electrification of complete tracks around Bengaluru and delay in starting construction of Baiyappanhalli third terminal and shortage of manpower are some of the issues,” said urban transport expert Sanjeev Dyamannavar.

However, Suhas Narayana Murthy, who has been campaigning for local trains on the route, says railways can run trains on the single line during the lean hours between 11 am and 3 pm. “More than 800 major companies are situated within 5 km of the railway line. Lakhs of people working in these firms will benefit by running trains during this period,” he said.

Suhas said Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda and former KSRTC and NGEF chairman T Prabhakar have supported the idea. “According  to the data provided by the traffic police, more than eight lakh commuters travel on this route. Just imagine how good it will be if the railways helps in removing lakhs of vehicles from the roads,” he said.

Murthy’s Facebook page ‘Nammacityexpress’ is followed by 1,822 people. “Reaching out to people through social media has made the train popular. Now that more people are ready to put away their vehicles, railways should do its part in running more trains,” he said.
