Jagga Jasoos

Hindi (U) ****
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Saswata Chatteree, Saurabh Shukla, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Rajatava Dutta
Director: Anurag Basu

It’s pitfalls notwithstanding, Jagga Jasoos is an experimental, engaging and entertaining ensemble detective thriller. Wild and wacky, whimsy and wonderful Jagga Jasoos, is an ode to detective genre and several masters of the art. An inspired flight of fancy Basu & Co have gleefully indulged themselves in.

From Satyajit Ray’s Feluda to Tin Tin, Belgian detective, to Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Jagga Jasoos, is a dash of them all, taking audiences on a royal, roller-coaster, reminiscent ride.

Indeed, Anurag Basu, must be lauded for his gigantic leap of faith. Both for adventurous script as also tongue in cheek narrative, and above all, rendering into musical detective thriller. You sway and sail along chuckling at the quirky happenings. The vision vivid and valorous. The execution bit enervating given it is nearly 162 mins long and second half sags.

As exotic as its outlandish outdoors and thrilling tale, Basu ensures his quintessential and maudlin tale of father-son, laced with love saga, has one drawn into the delirious drama. Jagga, adopted by from a hospital, sets upon to search for his adoptive Bagchi when told he is dead, only to stumble upon an international illegal arms racket. Jagga, who stammers, turns up mystery-solver with sharp mind and keen sense of observation, helping police solve crimes.

On one such mission he meets up Shruti, an investigative journalist.

Sumptuously shot with picturesque perfection by cinematographer Ravi Verman like proverbial colourful comic book feel, the film is also aided by well composed score by Pritam, given that it is told in a ballad comic book manner by the classroom teacher to the children. Ranbir covets you with innocent charm, while Katrina tries to be perfect foil.

Saswata Chatterjee as Bagchi is perfect, while ever reliable Saurabh Shukla adequate, and not to miss Nawazuddin’s cameo. Yes folks, troop in for that jolly jaunt as our Jaggo goes about his jasoosie with panache. Wow Basuda, hats off.
