District In-charge Minister K R Ramesh Kumar said Kempegowda Jayanti will be meaningful if members of all communities observe it together. He was speaking at Kempegowda Jayanti programme organised by the district administration in the city on Tuesday.

He said Kempegowda Jayanti is not limited to just Vokkaligas. “Kempegowda built Bengaluru with a vision and constructed its boundaries. But today, Bengaluru has developed far beyond those boundaries and lacks basic facilities,” he regretted.

Ramesh Kumar said Kempegowda was a great king who ruled over his kingdom well. His ideals should be inculcated. No one had limited him to any community earlier. But today, he is being restricted to a caste, he said.

He regretted that knowledge and respect are both on sale in the society. This is not good. Anyone can become doctor, if money is paid. Similarly, one can become engineer too. Also, they can come to power. One can live if he has the support of caste today, he observed.

Deputy Commissioner Dr K V Trilokchandra said Kempegowda was a well-known king and he was the architect of Bengaluru. He did not limit himself to the construction of Bengaluru. He had a farsighted vision about education and social change, the DC said.

He said Kempegowda took bold steps against social evils. One can build a better society if his ideals are followed, the DC observed. Zilla Vokkaligara Sangha president K V Shankarappa said a Kempegowda Bhavan should be constructed in Kolar and his statue should be installed in the city . Also, the government should name a layout and a road after Kempegowda, he demanded.

Shankarappa said there was no law or constitution during Kempegowda’s time. But he ruled the land very well. He was also concerned about environment and water, he noted. Earlier, Minister Ramesh Kumar inaugurated Masti Venkatesh Iyengar and DVG Study Centre on the premises of Rangamandira.

Zilla Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Nagananda Kemparaju delivered a special lecture on life and works of Kempegowda. Students presented cultural programmes. P Munireddy and artistes staged a play on Kempegowda.

Zilla Panchayat CEO B B Kaveri, SP Rohini Katoch Sepat, Vokkaligara Sangha director Ramachandra, district unit president V Krishnareddy, honorary president Bisappa Gowda, advocate Venkataramegowda and District Government Employees’ Association general secretary Ashok were present.
