The rise of vintage

C Alankrutha writes how to bring vintage design back in vogue, especially in your doors and windows

Vintage doors are sought after for their appeal and ability to provide an instant feeling of timelessness. Vintage, if you think about it, is always a winning option. Especially when it comes to doors and windows, the vintage theme never goes out of fashion - it looks luxurious and elegant and creates an aristocratic atmosphere in any space. Vintage style offers timeless designs which generally lasts almost forever.

It was not created to be temporary. If you want your space to have that timeless look, one that is as fresh and relevant today as it was yesterday, one that ages with grace and will also be a part of tomorrow, you would ideally pick designs and styles that are considered to be ‘classic,’ that have been created to last in style and colour, and materials that were meant to last.

Vintage design is also functional and classy in a timeless way. It is a style that suggests a quiet confidence. Timeless design is perfectly scaled and proportioned, often a visual treat to the eyes and statement-making element in the space. It helps you make your style statement and reflect the ideal look you want to achieve at a single spot, completely creating a vintage feel or effect.

Doors & windows

Vintage doors and windows are elements that are enduring. To achieve that look, one could draw inspiration from architectural history by utilising strong architraves, characteristic handles, knobs, thresholds, statues, surface decor or treatment and mouldings.

Your doors will be the first impression or testament that reflect your theme or context of design, leading to the other design aspects that follow inside the space.

Mixing vintage & modern

While completely adapting or reflecting a particular style from history (or a particular period from the past) is one way, another is to take inspiration and adapt a select few elements and mix or suit to trending styles, is in vogue at the moment. This also enables personalisation and warms down the scale and grandeur of vintage styles and more suitable for homes.

Secondly, the authenticity with regard to design, material flexibility and craftsmanship can be experimented or altered with based on personal requirements, budget, context and need.

Different kinds of door knobs

When it comes to vintage doors and windows, there exist a variety of knobs, handles and other accessories to match the vintage theme.

Often, these accessories are also adapted based on characteristic styles and functions, and are available in a variety of materials, though the common ones include brass, copper, wood and iron to give that authentic look. These accessories also make a style statement with surface decoration, ergonomics that also reflect style and hues.

Implementing in interiors

We have various ways to create a vintage-themed look or craft our interior spaces. Right from the door and windows, colour schemes, wall art, flooring, ceiling to fittings, everything can be adapted to the vintage theme. Being specific to doors and windows, we could zero in on the style. Based on the context or setting design the elements to suit our need. We also need to keep in mind the function, size, climatic factors based on the environment, hues, and security factors.
