Methi to combat monsoon ailments

With the arrival of monsoons, we are often plagued by digestive and respiratory ailments. Water-borne diseases like dysentery, diarrhoea, stomach disorders and cholera along with fever and cold are common phenomenon this season.

In such times, it is important to consume food that boosts your immunity, and you needn’t look far too find it. It an easily available ingredient, which occupies a prominent place in your masala box. Widely used in tempering, methi or fenugreek has several health benefits and can offer many effective cures for seasonal ailments.

Fevers and viral infections can leave a bitter aftertaste in your mouth and kill your appetite. To counteract this, wash a bunch of methi leaves thoroughly and boil them. Strain them and consume the water with a pinch of salt, twice or thrice a day. In a day or two, the bitter taste will leave your palate and the balance of the taste buds will be restored.

According to Ayurveda, methi balances the kapha and vata doshas, which are worn down during this season. Sipping on methi-infused water is an excellent remedy to revive your sluggish liver. To benefit from the blood purifying property of methi, add some methi sprouts to curries and stews.

As a home remedy for diarrhoea, swallow a few methi seeds with a spoonful of sweet curd. Repeat this for a day or two, to get relief from the symptoms. Mucilage, which gives stickiness to the seeds, helps in coating the lining of the stomach and restores the acid balance of the gut. It also helps in reviving a proper digestion.

Rich in fibre, methi helps peristaltic movement and clearing the bowels which are essential for a quick recovery after a seasonal affliction. Methi contains alkaoids, that lend it a bitter taste. These actually act as appetisers. So, use this bitter herb liberally in your food this season and stay immune to ailments.
