This photograph was taken in 1953 when I was studying in the fifth standard at Rashtreeya Vidyalaya, during our trip to Subramanyapura. We also visited Vasanthapura during the trip. The photograph was taken in an Agfa box camera.

I will never forget my school days and the time I spent with my friends in old Bangalore. I was always the quiet one but I had some naughty classmates. One such person is Pobbathi Balakrishna. Once he got some crackers in his pocket and they got soaked in the rain. So when he was trying to light it later, only smoke came out. He was very disappointed at what happened, but it was really funny for others.

He owns a silk sari shop in Gandhi Bazaar now. After my fifith standard, I went to Mandya in 1954, where my father Dr K Sripathy Rao was working as Resident Medical Officer in a general hospital. I remember my trip to Mysuru during Dussehra in 1957 when Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar used to come to Howdha.

When I returned to Bangalore in 1959, I was in ninth standard. It was great to see some of my friends from fifth standard in the same class in Bangalore High School. When I was studying in final year B.Sc. at Vijaya College 1964, I participated in the Republic Day parade at New Delhi representing Mysore.

Bangalore was not so crowded then. Buses were very few. Rich people and higher officers in Government services had motor cars and most of the cars were imported.

My father owned an Austin 8 (1946 model). Even after all these years, we are still maintaining the car in his remembrance.

Things weren’t tough back then. We could easily buy ‘dosa’ and ‘idli’ for 12 paise and coffee and ‘vada’ for 9 paise at Vidyarthi Bhavan.

Looking back at the picture brings back memories. It was a great time.
