Amid opposition to the shifting of Cantonment Metro station about 900 metres away from railway station, the South Western Railway (SWR) on Monday issued a clarification stating that it was ready to part with the land in front of the station.

While the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had planned an underground Metro station opposite to the railway station, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) shifted the station to Abdul Bari’s High School Ground next to Dhanakoti Road.

The new location is 300 metres away from the railway platform and 900 metres of walking distance from the entrance of the railway station. Travelling in a vehicle will increase the distance between Metro and railway stations to 1.7 km, thanks to traffic restrictions.

Following reports that the station was shifted after the Railways refused to part with the land in front of the Cantonment Railway Station, the South Western Railway sought to clarify the matter.

“In May, the BMRCL sought temporary allotment of about 16,000 square metres of land for four years and permanent licensing of about 2,500 square metres near Cantonment Railway station. We replied in June, seeking a joint survey as the BMRCL did not give the exact location of the station. We never heard from them again,” a spokesperson for SWR said.

BMRCL Managing Director Pradeep Singh Kharola, however, said that land availability was one of the eight key parameters which are looked into while deciding a location for Metro station. “The parameters include highly technical issues like curvature. It was proved that the present alignment serves more people than the previous one. As the new location (Bari’s High School Ground) scored high on many of these parameters, we decided to go with it.”
