LS adjourned after Oppn created ruckus

Last Updated 25 July 2017, 14:31 IST
The Lok Sabha on Tuesday was adjourned for the day after Opposition created ruckus in the House over a range of issues including two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members' remarks against Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia portraying him as “anti-dalit.”

Amid uproar, the Opposition also pressed for holding a discussion in Lok Sabha on various incidents of lynching in the name of cow protection in different parts of the country.

BJP members Virendra Kumar and Manohar Utwal, while speaking in the House during Question Hour on Monday, claimed that Scindia recently made insensitive comments and participated in “anti-Dalit activities” at an inauguration of a trauma centre in Madhya Pradesh.

“They have made false accusations against me. My image has been tarnished,” a visibly angry Scindia was said, raising the issue in the Lok Sabha after it reassembled at 3 PM on Tuesday.

A local dalit MLA of the BJP Gopilal Jatav recently inaugurated a trauma centre at a government hospital in Ashoknagar under Guna parliamentary constituency of Scindia, a day ahead of scheduled opening of the centre by the Congress leader on 22 June.

After this incident, Scindia's local representative Amit Tawre said that the trauma centre would be sanctified by Ganga water. Tawre, however, was expelled subsequently by the district Congress unit for his statement.

“They (BJP members in Lok Sabha) are saying that I made remarks against dalit and that venue of the public meeting (at the trauma centre in his parliamentray constituency in Madhya Pradesh) was sanctified by Ganga water. Nand Kumar Singh (BJP member) also said the same thing about me. These charges are absolutely incorrect. I challenge them,” Scindia said.

The Congress leader also offered to resign if the BJP members accusations were true.

“Other wise, I demand that they must resign from this House if they are wrong. They must also publicly apologise,” Scindia said.

He also gave a notice for initiating a privilege motion against the BJP members for their remarks against him.

Congress' leader in the House Mallikarjun Kharge, meanwhile, urged House to revoke suspension of the six members of his party, calling Speaker Sumitra Mahajan a “kind-hearted” person.

"This is why you throw anything (on me)," Mahajan, however, said in her immediate response.

Members of other Opposition parties including Trinamool Congress also urged the Speaker to revoke the suspension of the Congress members.

As the commotion continued, the Speaker adjourned the House for the day, saying, "If you are bent upon creating a ruckus, how will the House run? I have told you to raise your concerns under the rules.”

Earlier in morning, the Opposition created ruckus in the Lok Sabha over cow vigilantes and incidents of lynching in the name of cow protection soon, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the House within few minutes after it assembled for the day in morning.
