The Enforcement Directorate (ED) notched its first conviction under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by sentencing a terrorist of Pakistan origin in Mysuru on Tuesday.

The Principal City Civil and Sessions court, Mysuru sentenced Mohammed Fahad Hai to seven years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 10,000.

The court also directed the authorities concerned to confiscate cash worth Rs 44,174 along with the interest accrued, totalling Rs 90,470, from him.

The case dates back to 2006. A team of police, on the basis of information that certain terrorists from Pakistan were planning terror attacks in Mysuru, kept a watch near the high tension power line at Vijayanagar Ring Road and intercepted two persons riding a moped on October 26, 2006 at around 11.45 pm.

The officers stopped the duo for enquiry. When asked their names, the pillion rider replied that he knew only Hindi.

One of the police officers showed his identity card and asked them in Hindi to alight from the vehicle as they had to be searched.

Immediately, the pillion rider jumped down, pulled out a rifle from his bag and fired at the police squad.

Banned outfit cadres
Soon, more police arrived, overpowered the gun-toting pillion rider and apprehended both the men.

They identified themselves as Pakistani nationals by names Mohammed Ali Hussain and Mohammed Fahad Hai alias Mohammed Koya alias Neduthani (pillion rider). They were illegally residing in Rajiv Nagar in Mysuru.

Enquiry revealed that the duo were active members of the banned Al-Badr organisation and had entered India without  valid travel documents. They possessed an AK 47 rifle, pistol and live bullets without any license. They also had mobile and satellite phones.

All the arms, ammunition and the two-wheeler bearing registration number KA-09,G-424 were seized by police. A charge sheet was filed and subsequently the court convicted  Mohammed Fahad under PMLA.
