No 'bluff', Gaganachukki regains its glory

Last Updated 25 July 2017, 17:22 IST

After three years of deficit rains and drought, the Gaganachukki Falls near Shivanasamudra (Bluff), is in its full splendour this year thanks to copious rains in Kodagu region over the past few days.

The Gaganachukki Falls, which was a crowd puller during monsoon, had lost its attraction due to insufficient rains in the Cauvery catchment area resulting in KRS dam not reaching its maximum level over the past four years. With more rains predicted, local residents hope that Gaganachukki may regain its past glory.

Similarly, River Cauvery is swelling at Dhanushkoti and Sitamaduvu at Chunchanakatte near Saligrama, in K R Nagar taluk of Mysuru district. People, especially newly weds gather at Kodandarama temple on the outskirts of the town, to have a glimpse of nature’s bounty.

It is believed that mythological character Sri Rama had shot an arrow on to the earth when his wife Sita wanted water during their ‘vanavasa’ (forest stay). Hence, the place got the name Dhanushkoti.

It is also believed that Sita took a dip here and hence the colour of the water changes into a mix of green with a hint of brown.

Women perform puja for River Cauvery at Sitamaduvu and later visit Kodandarama temple. Hundreds of visitors from Hassan, Madikeri, Mandya and other places visit the place everyday during monsoon season.
